Have you ever sang a song over and over but somehow one day the words seem to take on a new meaning? There’s a song I used to sing quite a bit years ago. A while back I sang it again and this time it really got to me. It made me cry. Now every time I sing the song, I cry. Let me tell you why.
This song talks about God coming to get us to take us to Heaven. It says, “When He cometh, when He cometh to make up His jewels. All His jewels, precious jewels...” As I was singing these words I thought, “How can God think we are precious jewels?” Look at how we are! Look at what we’ve done to Him. Even the best of people have sinned and hurt God.
How could we ever be considered precious jewels? Then the song goes on to say, “Like the stars of the morning, His bright crown adorning. They shall shine in their beauty, Bright gems for His crown.” How could we ever be like the stars of the morning and shine beautiful in God’s crown?
But the song is correct. In the Bible we are told how precious we are to God. We are so precious to Him that He gave His son Jesus to die for us. When Adam sinned, God could have just wiped him off the face of the earth and started over. At the flood, God could have just destroyed everybody and started over.
There is some reason why God wants us to be His friends - His Jewels. I don’t understand it but it shows us the great value that God has placed on us. We are extremely valuable to Him. Who would die for something of little value? Who would be extremely patient, like God has been with us, if He didn’t see
something glorious worth waiting for?
“They shall be Mine,” says the Lord of hosts, “On the day that I make them My jewels.” Malachi 3:17.
Does the idea of being God’s jewels touch you like it has me?
The song is “When He Cometh,” by W.O. Cushing.
